Is your furry friend a Muncher?

Often described as food obsessed, this is the kind of pet that you can’t leave unattended at a family BBQ. Often found munching away on a half-eaten sandwich or god-forbid a child’s ice cream, our mischievous Munchers are food-driven to their core. They are the droolers, the never-full, tongue-sticking-out companions that will eat just about anything, and we mean anything. Socks, cardboard, erasers, medication – you name it, they’ve tried it. There are no limits to the palette or culinary desires of the Muncher.

Munchers are inquisitive by nature so excess eating and ingestion of foreign bodies could land them at their local vet clinic. Mum and dad could fork out for vet treatments related to stomach pumping, bloating, vomiting and diarrhea or even surgery. In the long term, Munchers could experience health issues like diabetes or obesity.

Meet Kransky, the mini dachshund who was rushed to the vet after ingesting pain relief medication. The owner came home from work one Saturday to find vomit on the carpet and after searching high and low, he discovered the chewed-up packet of medication on the table, with 4x tablets missing.

The owner called the vet and was instructed to go straight to emergency where Kransky and his sister Whinnie were both examined. Weighing in at just 7kg, Kransky was admitted for treatment for ingestion of toxin. The vet bill was $3,700 but the customer was able to claim on the spot by simply paying the gap of $740 using their GapOnly® ready policy, meaning they didn’t have to pay the full cost upfront.

“As the incident happened on a Saturday, we wouldn’t have been able to get finance to cover the full payment, so the fact that our insurance policy covered a portion of the cost was a huge relief. After seeing the GapOnly sign at the counter, I enquired with our vet who explained how it worked and who took care of the claims process for us [by submitting the claim on our behalf].

“I’m truly grateful that we had access to GapOnly as it made an already stressful experience more manageable. It also meant we could prioritise quickly getting the right care for Kransky without worrying about forking out for the full unplanned cost.” – GapOnly® customer, Timothy McLeod

Following treatment, Kransky made a full recovery and was back to his cheeky self -sniffing around the dishwasher, demanding cuddles from his owner and striking a pose for social media.

According to PetSure data, the average claim amount for canines for ingestion of foreign bodies in 2022 was $1,481, with an average benefit paid of $1,066 per case.
